If you’re already walking regularly when it comes to your exercise and movement, this should be your next step: resistance training.
If you’re not doing any resistance training, now is the time to start!
There are many reasons why, but it’s important to know that sarcopenia (age related muscle loss) begins in your 30’s. After 40, muscle mass decreases by roughly 10% per decade if you don’t do any resistance training.
Why does that matter? The leading cause of injury related deaths as we age is falls. In order to be resilient to falls and decrease the likelihood of falls, it’s important to have muscle mass. Conversely, higher muscle mass correlates with a decrease in all-cause mortality.
Here are some other benefits of resistance training:
- increasing overall strength
- increasing overall muscle mass
- increasing bone density
- decreasing the likelihood of injury, especially fall related injuries
- decreases risks of Alzheimer’s disease
- helps maintain healthy blood pressure
- reduces risks of heart disease
We could go on (we will if you want us to😉), but that list alone should give you the nudge you need.
If you’re not sure where or how to start or know someone who should start but needs support, we’d love to help!
