January 1st is right around the corner!
And while many in our industry don't love New Year's resolutions due to the poor success rate (by June, less than 50% of people are still on track to their goal), we believe that if it enables you to take action on a goal, then why not!
However, if you're repeating the same resolution year after year, it probably isn't the fact that it's January, and more than likely has a lot to do with your ability to follow through on the goal you're after.
So, let's set you up for success this January! Here are some steps we utilize with our clients when setting goals, no matter the time of year:
1. Identify the goal. This one's obvious BUT don't just identify the goal, identify the why behind your goal. Ideally it's something measurable, so you can know if you've actually achieved it.
2. Identify the action steps needed to achieve this goal. Make a list of everything you can think of that would need to be true for this goal to happen.
3. Audit that list and pick ONE thing to start with. The example we give is if your goal is to lose 20lbs because you want to feel healthier, fit into clothes, etc, and you've made your list, picking something like walking 20 minutes a day is your new mini goal.
4. Once you've created a new, CONSISTENT habit, that's when you return to your list of action steps and pick something else to add. This is called habit stacking!
This doesn't have to be a skill you only use in the new year! Habit stacking is an incredible tool to use anytime you want to create new habits or achieve a goal.
What are you hoping to achieve in the new year? What mini goal will you start with?!
